Bank warns customers of phony e-mail info request
The Bank of Bermuda is warning customers to be vigilant against phishing e-mails asking them for personal account information.
The latest fraudulent e-mail states: "An internal error has been detected on your Online Account. To rectify this error, click here to begin ..."
It was allegedly sent from the "Account Access Dept. Bank Of Bermuda (HSBC)".
The scam follows an e-mail circulated in January telling people their bank Internet access was temporarily suspended and asking them to verify their online banking profile.
Previous phishing scams also circulated the Island last year.
A Bank of Bermuda spokeswoman said: "HSBC Bermuda is aware that some of our customers have received an e-mail asking them to log on to a fraudulent website and provide personal financial information.
"The public should note that phishing emails, along with other fraudulent e-mails, are constantly circulating.
"In this instance, the Bank acted immediately and is working with the appropriate security authorities in disabling the site."
She said: "HSBC Bermuda would like to advise its valued customers that any requests received via e-mail to validate personal information should be declined.
"Under no circumstances would HSBC Bermuda send e-mails requesting customers to confirm debit/credit card numbers, account numbers or other personal log-on information.
"Any client who responds to a fraudulent email and provides personal log-on information should immediately contact the Bank's Call Centre at 441 299 5959."
Online customers should always access Internet banking by typing their bank's address into a web browser. Never access a website via a link an e-mail and enter personal details.
