Scott Barnes and Stevie Roberts crowned Bermuda Open Doubles champions
Scott Barnes and Stevie Roberts are basking in glory after capturing a maiden Bermuda Open Doubles title together at Sandys Boat Club last Saturday.
The long-time friends came from behind to defeat rivals Paul Fedden and Tyler Moniz 3-1 in the final, with the title a first for Barnes who persuaded the highly-decorated Roberts to come out of retirement.
“Steve was one of Bermuda’s best, if not the best, in his prime,” Barnes told The Royal Gazette.
“He hasn’t played in probably about ten years and I brought him out of retirement and thankful that he came out and played with me since he hadn’t picked up a stick in many years.
“Stevie is a just a natural, raw talent and when I asked him to play he said, ‘sure’, and came out.
“We played three games to get to the final and then the final, and he shot well for not having played in over ten years.”
Fedden and Moniz took the opening frame 58-26 to seize early control of the match, but Barnes and Roberts bounced back at the earliest opportunity to win the second frame 42-38 and draw level.
The pair then won the third frame 54-30 to surge ahead and capitalised on the momentum by taking the fourth frame 50-22 to seal the deal.
“Paul and Tyler shot some really good snooker the first and second game,” Barnes added. “The first two games we were not on form and couldn’t get into a rhythm.
“We were able to sneak out the second game to tie it up and, once we got that game, we knew we were warmed up and if we started shooting well they would be in trouble.
“The next two games went our way and we were warmed up and really controlled the next two games, but they put up a great fight for all four games with two great players on their side.”
The triumph was especially sweet for Barnes.
“It was definitely exciting and I amvery proud to finally have my name on that trophy,” he said. “Just really excited to finally get my name on the trophy and keep it there for history.”
Elsewhere, Steven Bremar capitalised on home advantage with a 3-0 win over former Olympic sailor Peter Bromby in the Bermuda Open Singles semi-final at Warwick Workmen’s Club on Monday.
Bremar had things all his own way as he took the first frame 62-22, the second 56-16 and the third 62-26 to complete the sweep and advance to the final.
He will now face the winner of the remaining semi-final between Todd Dziak and Aaron Bean.
Also savouring glory were defending champions Sandys Boat Club, who defeated Royal Artillery Association 3-0 in the Island Construction Services Cup final to retain their title at Spanish Point Boat Club on Tuesday.
Captain Martin Siese set the tone courtesy of 48-21 win over Jacal Washington in the opening frame.
Fedden then prevailed 68-24 over Odin Lowe in the second frame to cushion his team’s lead and place them on the brink of victory.
It was left to Bromby to get them safely across the line at the earliest opportunity in the third frame, which he did so convincingly with an emphatic 70-22 win over Kyle Williams that also completed the clean sweep.
“I think all our team played well and we were fortunate to just have that little edge on the RAA guys,” Siese said.
“It was a lot of fun and we’re proud to have managed to win the trophy.”
