Students seeking a career in healthcare are invited to apply for a government scholarship named after a pioneering doctor.

The Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarship is available to anyone “passionate about making a difference in Bermuda's public health field”.

Dr Ball, the first Bermudian woman to practise medicine in Bermuda, ardently advocated for people's rights. She was born in Bermuda in 1924 and earned her medical degree from Liverpool University Medical School in 1949.

She returned to Bermuda in 1954 to dedicate herself to the welfare of the underprivileged.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, said: "The Government is proud to offer scholarships to exceptional students pursuing careers in healthcare.

"Whether providing care to patients in a hospital setting or working in public health to improve the health outcomes of entire populations, healthcare professionals can make a real difference in people's lives.

"As the population ages and medical technology advances, the demand for healthcare professionals will only increase. Furthermore, many healthcare jobs offer competitive salaries and benefits, making it a financially attractive field.

"The ministry wishes all applicants every success as they continue their studies and encourages all eligible students to apply by the deadline."
