This weekend’s coronation events
Several events are going on in Bermuda this weekend to celebrate the coronation, including the opening of a special garden at the Botanical Gardens today.
Other events include a service of thanksgiving at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity tomorrow and a children’s reading festival on Monday.
The tree planting and opening of the Coronation Garden at the Botanical Gardens will take place at 11am today.
Two special church services will take place tomorrow.
St Peter’s Church, Their Majesties Chappell, will hold a special service in celebration of the coronation at 11am.
A statement said: “As the new monarch of Great Britain, King Charles becomes the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, so it is fitting this is recognised in the oldest Anglican church outside of the British Isles.
“Queen Elizabeth II, in 2012 as a gift in her Diamond Jubilee year, granted St Peter’s Church the Royal designation ‘Their Majesties Chappell’, a designation first used for St Peter’s in the 1690s during the reign of King William III and Queen Mary II.”
A special thanksgiving service will also take place at the Anglican Cathedral at 3pm.
On Monday, the Bermuda alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority with the Government of Bermuda will host The Royal Edition of the Annual Children’s Reading Festival in recognition of the coronation .
This free event will be held at Victoria Park in Hamilton, between 11am and 4pm.
The Children’s Reading Festival is a community event designed to promote a love of reading in children.
Every child in attendance (from birth to age 14) will receive a free book. There will be resources for parents to explore how to support their young readers and opportunities for creative play and exploration to stimulate and challenge in a fun-filled venue.
As this is the Royal Edition of the festival, participants will be able to wear tiaras and crowns and take an opportunity to take pictures on a fancy throne. There will also be fun castles, face painters, a creative arts station and the Bermuda National Library’s Youth Services on hand. Each child will receive free popcorn and water, and there will be food vendors available on site.
The readers’ pavilion will feature a selection of Bermudian authors and community leaders reading their favourite children’s stories, including the Cabinet ministers Owen Darrell and Tinée Furbert. lawyer Ariana Caines, author Fiona Elkinson and Sergio Pitcher, from Planet Math.
