Premier Health takes over East End medical practice
A long-established medical practice in St George’s has changed hands. Veteran physician Henry Subair is retiring after 52 years in the medical field.
Premier Health & Wellness Centre has announced the acquisition of his practice. Effective today, the practice will be taken over by chief executive officer Stanley James and his team.
The acquisition adds to the existing Premier Health & Wellness Centre practice on King Street in Hamilton.
Dr Subair, a respected physician and trailblazer in the field of rheumatology, has served St George’s for 42 years.
His career began with studies at the University of Bristol and the University of London, and he has worked in various capacities in Britain, Canada, and Bermuda, contributing significantly to medical knowledge through research and publications, Premier Health said.
In his message to patients and colleagues, Dr Subair said: "It has been my great pleasure to serve my wonderful patients. I will miss you all dearly. God bless."
Dr James, who said he was inspired by Dr Subair as a young Bermudian, considers the acquisition a homecoming, as he fondly recalls his early days at East End Primary School.
He said: "Dr Subair is a trailblazer of medical excellence. It is an honour to have been selected by him to continue care of his patients with whom he shared a sacred trust.”
Dr James' journey to becoming a physician began at East End Primary, where he said he was encouraged by the school secretary, Ms Pearson.
He was a plumbing apprentice of Ronald P Smith at Corbin's Plumbing and worked at Club Med during summers for school fees.
Dr James said compassion and hard work were modelled by his family and reinforced by the St George's Seventh-day Adventist Church and celebrated by the St David's community.
He also attended Berkeley Institute and Bermuda Institute, where he was head boy.
Dr James earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and religion from Oakwood University in Alabama, an master’s from Andrews University Theological Seminary in Michigan, and an medical doctorate from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California.
He completed his internal medicine residency at Kettering Medical Centre/Wright State University in Ohio, and is currently pursuing a doctorate (2026) from Aberdeen University, focusing on racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare.
As Premier Health & Wellness Centre takes over Dr Subair's practice, the team is committed to carrying on his legacy of excellent patient care in St George’s, Dr James said.
He added: "St George's is home, and I am delighted to return to a proud community that cared for me; now I am humbled to be here to care for them. I am happy to say, I am coming home."
The Centre offers a wide range of services, including electrocardiogram, ultrasound, blood work lab, IV nutritional therapy, dietitian consultations, expert general practice, Premier vitamins, and more.
