All to play for as Appleby and Alexandra Mosher clash in decider
It’s winner takes all at the Bermuda Ball Hockey Association finals tonight as Appleby take on Alexandra Mosher in the final match at the Pembroke Community Club.
With the three-game series tied at 1-1 after Appleby won 4-2 in the first game last Friday and Alexandra Mosher triumphing 2-1 on Wednesday, the final match looks destined to be a thriller.
Both teams scored in the opening quarter of the first game, with J.M. Tremblay on target for Alexandra Mosher and Shannon Gosse netting for Appleby.
Andrew Kuzma and Matt Katzsch put Appleby in control in the second period, with Bill Calko also scoring for Alexandra Mosher, but Appleby extended their lead in the last quarter with another strike from Gosse.
On Wednesday, the two teams were again tied after the first quarter, with Andrew Leavy opening the scoring for Alexandra Mosher before Katzsch levelled things. Calko then popped up with a late winner for Alexandra Mosher.
Shane Matchett, the Alexandra Mosher captain, feels his side have performed well considering they were viewed as easy prey for an Appleby team who had finished top of the league at the end of the regular season.
“This has been a great, hard-fought series very fitting of the finals, Matchett said.
“Our team came in as an underdog against a loaded Appleby team who finished first in the regular season, but we battled hard, came together as a team and really look forward to having another great game.’’
Hart Freedman, the general manager and captain for Appleby, was pleased with his side’s win in the first match despite missing a number of key players but feels his players did not display the same intensity in game two.
“For the first game, we were missing our best player and we were missing two other strong forwards and we had our backs against the wall, but we played well under pressure,” Freedman said.
“Game two, I felt that the team just didn't come out with the same energy as we have in previous games and our goalie really played amazing to keep us in there.”
