Deniche Hill scored a superb goal in Leicester City under-21’s 2-1 extra-time defeat to Newcastle United in the Soccer Sevens Shield Final in Hong Kong on Sunday.

The Bermuda winger won possession in his own half and dribbled the ball into the opposition penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot into the bottom far corner to level the scores after Michael Ndiweni had put Newcastle ahead from a free kick.

Ndiweni’s breakthrough strike arrived after Leicester’s Kian Pennant had an effort saved and Hill dragged wide unopposed from inside the area.

With the game hanging in the balance, Hill made a huge tackle to deny Ndiweni before team-mate Joe Wormleighton went agonisingly close after striking the bar with the last kick in regulation time.

A cagey affair was ultimately decided by James Huntley’s golden-goal winner in extra time, which featured both teams revert to a four-a side format played over as many minutes.

Hill, who was signed by Leicester last December, six months after making his debut for Bermuda in a goalless draw against Haiti at Flora Duffy Stadium in the Concacaf Nations League. summed up the tournament as a memorable experience despite not winning any silverware.

“It was good to get away with the lads after having a rough league campaign and to be able to travel the world and experience new things,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“The tournament was a good experience playing in a seven-a-side format and the hospitality and facilities were top drawer.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t come away with a trophy, but it was good to cap off the season with such a memorable experience.”

Leicester advanced to the quarter-final after winning their group, in which their only defeat came with a 1-0 loss to Hong Kong Premier League side Tai Po when Hill was not included in the squad.

The Bermudian was among a trio of players who returned for Leicester’s Shield semi-final clash with Fulham, which they won 2-0 after first-half strikes from Wormleighton and Kasey McAteer, who pounced within seven minutes of each other.

Leicester managed to secure their spot in the final despite being reduced to six men after Lewis Brunt received a red card for a last-man challenge early in the second half

Having been granted a numerical advantage, Fulham dominated possession as they desperately battled to get back into the contest, but City held firm with custodian Brad Young tipping a shot over the bar and Wormleighton clearing another off the line to preserve their team’s two-goal advantage and secure their spot in the final.
