Men’s squash team head to Colombia for Pan American Squash Championships
Some of Bermuda’s best male squash players will be heading to Cartagena, Colombia, for the Pan American Squash Championships next month.
Noah Browne, Anaya Smith and Taylor Carrick have been tasked with the job of heading to South America and performing well enough to qualify for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in October.
Eighteen Pan American countries will be fighting to qualify with eight slots available. Chile have qualified as the host nation with Argentina claiming their spot by winning the South American Games.
Browne is the only remaining team member who was part of the Bermuda squad that qualified for the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru for the first time after defeating the British Virgin Islands in the final of the 2018 Pan American Squash Championships in the Cayman Islands.
Micah Franklin, now head of squash at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association, and Nick Kyme were Browne’s teammates on that occasion.
Franklin, who is not available for the squad as a result of a conflicting trip abroad, has conceded that it will be difficult for Bermuda to qualify considering that Peru have in their team Diego Elias, the current world number one.
“Its going to be very difficult task,”Franklin said.
“Bermuda are a small nation and we are up against far bigger nations and Peru have the current number one Diego Elias. Bermuda have to play really well to qualify but I am sure the boys will be giving it 100 percent.”
Browne and Smith leave on Friday with Taylor set to meet up with them in Colombia after travelling from Canada.
