Closed and restricted job lists remain unchanged
The existing lists of job categories off-limits to work-permit holders will remain the same for the next three months, the Ministry of Economy and Labour announced on Wednesday.
Closed and restricted job categories set out in December will remain unchanged, with the moratorium on new work permits for the jobs being extended to August 31.
Employment restrictions were boosted in November 2020 in response to the unemployment crisis caused by the pandemic.
Since last December, 46 jobs have been closed to work-permit holders, with a further 11 deemed “restricted”.
The application process for restricted jobs, according to Section 3.7 of the Work Permit Policy, is the same as applications for open jobs.
The only exceptions are that an employer must apply for a maximum term of one year and show that applicants screened by the Department of Workforce Development have been properly considered.
The department is expected to respond to inquiries by employers within ten working days.
Should no response be given, the employer may submit the application with written evidence that they made inquiries.
Partners of Bermudians, permanent resident certificate holders, non-Bermudians on a work permit and other legal residents are able to apply for jobs.
Partners who do not have permission to reside in Bermuda may now apply for residency and to seek employment.
The list for closed job categories is: administrative assistant, airline ground agent, bank teller, carpet installer, cashier, childcare assistant, courier, customs care/service rep, debt collector, deckhand, dispatcher road transport, entertainer/musician, executive secretary/assistant, fisherman, general bartender, general labourer, golf instructor, grocery packer, guest service agent, handyman, HR officer/manager, intern, laundry attendant, legal clerk, librarian, office receptionist, painter, paraprofessional, photographer, pool/beach attendant, public relations officer, real-estate agent, retail-floor supervisor, room attendant, salesperson, seasonal work permits, security guards, senior clerk, taxi driver, teaching aide, technician salesperson, telephone switchboard operator, tourist retail salesperson, travel agent/consultant, wallpaper technician and warehouse clerk.
The list for restricted job categories includes: dish/pot washer, electrician, general carpenter, general mason, kitchen assistant, kitchen porter, entry-level landscape gardener, plumber, residential or commercial cleaner, tennis instructor and waiter/server.
A ministry spokesman said: “The Ministry of Economy and Labour’s main aim is always to ensure the effective use of policies that create job opportunities for Bermudians.
“Closed and restricted job categories encourage companies to consider and develop Bermudians in the workforce.
“As the employment landscape in Bermuda continues to shift, policy amendments will reflect the changes in demand.”
