The Minister of Transport spoke out against a series of “senseless acts of violence” aimed at bus drivers.

Wayne Furbert told the House of Assembly yesterday that measures would be put in place to protect drivers after they have faced attacks while on the job.

He said: “The safety and wellbeing of our public transportation operators is of paramount importance to us.

“These valued workers play a crucial role in keeping our island moving, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their hard work and dedication.

“It is unacceptable that they should have to face violence and aggression while carrying out their duties.”

Mr Furbert said that a discussion took place between police and the Department of Public Transportation to help address this problem directly.

He added that measures would be developed to protect operators, such as training programmes around conflict navigation and policies to allow surveillance cameras in buses.

The transport minister said that laws will be modelled after the UK’s Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, which outlines protective measures for public transport operators.

He added that “we will not rest until those responsible for these attacks have been brought to justice”.

Mr Furbert said: “I would like to reiterate our commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our bus operators and all frontline workers in Bermuda.

“We will not tolerate any form of violence or aggression towards them, and we will take all necessary steps to ensure their safety.

“We urge everyone to show their support for our frontline transportation workers and to work together towards a safer and more peaceful Bermuda.”

Anyone who witnesses a physical confrontation on a bus should alert police by calling 911.

If the situation has ended, witnesses can support the bus operator and report what they have seen by calling 292-3851.
