A cruise ship passenger was fined $1,000 after a routine security search led to cannabis being found inside his cabin.

Walter Bonton Jr, 52, from Brooklyn, New York, pleaded guilty to importing 38.6 grams of the drug into Bermuda when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court today.

The court heard that Bonton arrived on the island aboard the Liberty of the Seas on June 3.

Security dogs detected the drug inside Bonton’s room while officers were inspecting cabins on the ship.

Police seized the drug, as well as ten grams of chocolate that contained less than 1 per cent of THC, and arrested Bonton.

Prosecutor T’Deana Spencer told the court that the cannabis seized has a local street value of about $1,560.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson fined Bonton $1,000 for the offence.
