Thanks to a recent change in regulations, some Bermudians who were unable to donate blood can now do so.

Kim Wilson, the Minister of Health, has taken advantage of the opportunity and donated blood at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

According to the Bermuda Blood Donor Centre’s old rules, people like the minister, who lived in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe years ago, could not donate blood on the island until earlier this month.

A ban was imposed owing to concerns about a potential of exposure to meat from cows with bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Ms Wilson said: “These revised rules not only recognise the changing demographics of our island but also bring us in line with international best practices.

“By expanding the pool of eligible donors, Bermuda can ensure a more robust and diverse blood supply, pivotal in saving lives during medical emergencies, surgeries, and treatments.

“I am honoured to have the opportunity to contribute to this important cause and applaud the Bermuda Blood Donor Centre for embracing inclusivity.”

Encouraging others on the island to donate their blood as well, the minister added: “Blood donation is an act of generosity and compassion that can make a tangible difference in the lives of our fellow citizens.”
