Treadwell Gibbons and Tamauri Tucker power Cleveland to victory
Southampton Oval (Southampton Rangers won toss): Cleveland County beat Southampton Rangers by 151 runs
Cleveland County cruised into the second round of the Bermuda Cricket Board Knockout Cup with an emphatic victory over Southampton Rangers on Sunday.
The visiting side posted 250 all out after being sent to bat, with opener Treadwell Gibbons blasting a brisk century and Dion Stovell a more sedated fifty to lead the charge.
Cleveland then dismissed the home side for 99 with off spinner Tamauri Tucker inflicting the heaviest damage with the ball on the way to figures of six for 22.
“Today was a great performance, I was really pleased with the team,” said newly appointed Cleveland coach Clevie Wade, who celebrated his first win since taking over the helm. “We posted a nice score and then bowled well, so I am happy with the performance, to get my first win under my belt and move on to the next round.”
Gibbons and Stovell laid the platform for Cleveland’s convincing win as they added 194 for the second wicket after losing wicketkeeper Q’Shai Darrell without bothering the scorers.
Gibbons put Rangers’ attack to the sword as he thumped six sixes and nine fours during his whirlwind knock of 118 from 104 balls, with Stovell’s 52 from as many balls including three boundaries.
Cleveland suffered a major collapse after the pair were removed in the space of three overs as their remaining seven wickets fell for 49 runs with Tucker (16 not out) the only other batsman in double figures.
Southampton captain Dalin Richardson was the pick of his team’s bowling with four for 17 while new-ball bowler Donte Brangman claimed three for 34 and second-change Makai Jacobs two for 42.
In reply, the home side found themselves in deep trouble at 52 for five and never recovered as wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals before they were eventually dismissed.
Brangman (15) and last man Isaiah Taylor (15 not out) topped the Southampton batting with captain Richardson (13) and wicketkeeper Najiyah Raynor (12) the only others in double figures.
The Southampton batters struggled against spin as Stovell took two for nine from five overs.
