Fort Hamilton upgrades planned, application filed

Changes could come to Fort Hamilton, according to a recent planning application by the Corporation of Hamilton.

According to planning documents, the City hopes to enhance the public amenities at the site through a staged renovation project.

The application includes upgraded electrical and water-supply systems, improved lighting and renovation of some existing buildings and structures to “create improved facilities for public events”.

Work would also include better lighting to improve accessibility and highlight aspects of the architecture, new ADA-compliant public restrooms, new signage to provide historical, social and engineering information, and new landscaping.

Fort Hamilton was built in the 1870s to guard over Hamilton Harbour, but it was never used in combat.

The site has since become an attraction for visitors, boasting gardens and views of the City and harbour.
