Tanker diverts towards Bermuda for treatment of crew member

An oil tanker was forced to turn to the island this weekend after a crew member almost lost his finger.

According to a Department of Marine and Ports incident report, Bermuda Radio was contacted by STI Jermyn at about 8.15am on Saturday.

“The caller informed that they had an injured crew member on-board who had nearly severed his finger and they intended to divert to Bermuda for medical assistance,” the report said.

“Bermuda Radio conference called RCC Norfolk and their flight surgeon was able to discuss the case and offer medical advice.

“The vessel was 220 nautical miles North of Bermuda, and an offshore transfer was planned for the early hours of Sunday morning, King Edward the VII Memorial Hospital were kept up dated with the patients symptoms and treatment.

The injured mariner was picked up by the pilot boat St David at 5.40am on Sunday morning and taken to a waiting ambulance at Ordnance Island to be transported to KEMH.
