Bermuda women’s hockey team captain LaKae Tavares is proud of the resilience shown by the side at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Dominican Republic.

Tavares and her team-mates go out in search of their first win of the tournament when they face Puerto Rico in their final pool B fixture today.

Despite missing out on progression through to the semi-finals after defeats to Barbados and Dominican Republic, Tavares praised her side’s efforts thus far, as they now look to finish as high as possible in the play-off matches for fifth to eighth position.

“First, I want to say I’m extremely proud of our team so far,” said Tavares.

“We have had to overcome some obstacles over the past few days, but the resilience and work ethic of our players has really proven that we’re focused and working towards the same goal.

“Unfortunately, we did not get the results that we wanted from the first two games against Barbados and Dominican Republic, but that doesn’t mean we’re dropping our heads and giving up.”

Tavares has called upon her team-mates to remain positive moving forward as they look to learn from the previous setbacks as well as building on the things they have successfully executed on the pitch.

“We have three games left to play,” added Tavares.

“We want to go into our next game against Puerto Rico with the confidence and understanding that if we work hard for one another, we can achieve the outcome that we want and deserve.

“I’m excited for the next few days and the opportunity we all have to represent our country and give back to the sport that has given so much to each and every one of us.”

Coach Kovin Moodley has also set his sights on redemption against Puerto Rico.

“We have to redirect our attention towards the next task at hand, which is the game against Puerto Rico,” he said.

“We've been able to understand as much as we can about Puerto Rico, they were a team that came into the qualifiers last year.

“We will look at the style of play, it seems not much has changed in the way that they play, so we feel quite confident moving into the next game. We feel like our progress and our plans are going to work in our favour.”
