Remembering Dolly with fondness
Dear Sir,
I was saddened, but not surprised, to read of the death of my friend, Dolly Pitcher. It was only last week, when I visited Dolly in hospital, and she explained in detail how to make fish chowder. She was very much “on the ball”. Nice memories of my last visit with her.
I first met Dolly when I was working on the finish line for the Marion Bermuda and Newport Bermuda races, starting in 1979. Before the present technology, we took over the lighthouse keeper’s home, taking our camping beds and staying for the time of the race.
Dolly and her crew did breakfast, lunch and dinner for us. She looked after me, even cooking something separately should the dish have garlic. (I have an allergy to garlic.) She even made me half a gallon of chowder to take home!
It was a joy to work with Willy Frith, Elystan Haycock, John Gibson Young and many others — to sit at the table and listen to many stories of times gone by. What a week that was with good food and good company!
Dolly and her crew were true St David’s Islanders — warm, welcoming and generous.
God bless you, Dolly, and may you rest in peace — well deserved from a life well lived.
