The Government is looking for a firm to help refurbish emissions monitoring equipment at the Tynes Bay Waste-to-Energy plant.

A request for proposal published recently on the government procurement website stated that the Government was looking to enter into an agreement with a supplier to refurbish the site’s integrated continuous environmental monitoring systems.

The systems are used to measure and record emissions, both gas and particulate, from the Devonshire facility.

“The supplier will be required to remove the existing equipment, prepare the monitoring building and flue portals for the new equipment, install the equipment including all cables and connectors, test and commission the new systems,” the notice stated.

“The supplier shall provide scheduled maintenance services and calibration of the equipment, biannually, for three years after the systems are commissioned.”

The documents stated that the work must not interrupt the delivery of waste to the facility.

The deadline for submissions is 3pm on August 18.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, told the House of Assembly last year that urgent work was needed at the Tynes Bay facility to prevent potential “catastrophic failures”.

A stabilisation programme costing $22 million was approved earlier last year to keep the facility up and running until “major” refurbishments can be done.

The Government has also announced that it was preparing amendments to the Clean Air Act to update and introduce new measures to address air-quality standards.

Walter Roban, the Minister of Home Affairs, said after last November’s Throne Speech that the amendments would also introduce measures to minimise the impact that nuisance odours have on the public.
