Dayla Richards and D’wzjhane’ Smith have been named the latest recipients of the Dame Marjorie Bean Scholarship by the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

The scholarship, which is open to Bermudian females in high school who have demonstrated leadership skills, offers recipients $1,500 in support to continue their studies.

Ms Richards, a graduate of the Berkeley Institute, is set to attend Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where she will study radiologic technology.

A spokeswoman for the chapter said: “Having a keen interest in the sciences, she recognised that she wanted a career in diagnostic imaging in her third year of high school as she enjoyed studying human biology and learning the complexity of the body’s function.

“Ms Richards has been described as a team player, possessing good leadership skills, and a supporter of her fellow classmates.”

Ms Smith, a graduate of CedarBridge Academy, will attend Bermuda College this autumn to study accounting and finance.

“She decided to take this career path due to her enjoyment of the fundamental analytical and numerical aspects of accounting,” the spokeswoman said.

“As an enthusiastic, hard-working, active student on campus, Ms Smith is a reporter for the student government and part of the National Honours Society.”

Shawnette Smith, president of the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of the sorority, congratulated both awardees.

“As a public service organisation committed to the educational development of the communities we live in, providing the Dame Marjorie Bean Scholarship is one of the numerous ways we proudly give back to the community,” she said.

“We wish both Ms Richards and Ms Smith much success as they embark on the next step in their education goals.”
