The Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport has reminded the public to spread its hospitality and brotherly camaraderie during the Cup Match holiday.

Owen Darrell said the games were “a reflection of the true spirit of Bermuda” and full of friendly banter.

“This iconic event unites us as a community, transcending boundaries of age, race and background to revel in the shared love for cricket, camaraderie, and the vibrant culture that makes our island nation so unique,” he told the Senate yesterday.

“We all look forward to the fun rivalry of Cup Match but the Government also wants to ensure that we all celebrate safely.”

Mr Darrell said earlier that St George’s Cricket Club selected the engineer who prepared the scaffolding for Cup Match, while the Government provided the funding.

He added that the Government offered $14,335 for this project, in addition to $50,000 earmarked for the St George’s Cricket Club towards hosting the games.

The holiday will be Mr Darrell’s first time celebrating Cup Match as youth, culture and sport minister.

He said that Cup Match was a reminder of “the importance of community spirit and supporting one another” and encouraged the public to enjoy themselves while making sure loved one and strangers were safe.

Mr Darrell added: “I encourage to public to attend the Cup Match trials at each of the clubs this Saturday for the exciting selection that ensues that evening.”
