Speed bumps on busy road get remake after complaints
A double speed bump in Devonshire that has angered local residents had to be redone a day after being placed on a public road.
The two bumps were installed on Watlington Road East but drew complaints from residents who said one in particular was too high.
Christopher Famous, MP for nearby Devonshire East, said that the traffic-calming measures could not be installed on a road unless the residents requested it.
“Over the last few years, residents of Watlington Road East have requested speed bumps because of excessive speed from Chaingate Hill to Brighton Hill Road.”
Mr Famous said on Thursday that the speed bump in place near Lindo’s Market was satisfactory, but the second, near the Mr Chicken Express, was not.
He said the speed bump was too high and that Works and Engineering had been notified.
According to the public works ministry, both speed bumps were redone the day after their installation on Wednesday.
A third was put in place near the junction with Poinciana Road.
Officials confirmed that they had been placed in response to requests from area residents to help to combat speeding in the area.
“When the ministry was alerted to complaints from the motoring public about the installation, an immediate investigation was launched and it was determined that the installation was incorrect.
“The speed bumps were subsequently removed and will be reinstalled according to plan. An internal investigation is under way to determine the root cause of the failure.
“The ministry apologises to motorists for any inconvenience caused.”
Mr Famous said yesterday that to his knowledge, just one speed bump had been fixed and given a lower gradient.
A resident of Green Acres Road, who did not give a name, said the neighbourhood had been taken by surprise by their installation.
“We’ve had no major problems there,” he said. “It’s not a major accident hotspot.
“If there’s speeding, we see that everywhere all over the island. If the Government can take time to put speed bumps there, there’s a lot of other areas they could put them.
“Put them by Lindo’s in Warwick in that case. I’m not in favour of it at all.”
