Politicians, diplomats and dozens of guests headed east to celebrate the grand opening of LF Wade International Airport’s newest store.

Located on the terminal’s ground level, the new store, Somers Isle Minimart, is open to everyone — including airport staff and non-passengers — and is operated by Love Bermuda, which was awarded the airport’s retail contract in 2020.

Wayne Furbert, the Minister of Transport, Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, and Karen Grissette, the US Consul-General, attended the opening, which was the first big public event to be held inside the terminal since 2020.

Aaron Adderley, president of airport developer Skyport, said all the terminal’s stores enhance the airport’s overall feel by capturing the island’s colour and life.

He added: “This effort has required significant financial investment and despite pandemic-induced challenges, Somers Isle has remained committed to investing over $6 million in the airport.”

Wayne Smith, the executive director for the Association of Bermuda International Companies, said that hospitality was in Bermuda’s DNA.

He explained: “This is a great opportunity to create jobs for Bermudians and put some retail in our economy.

“I am looking forward to the continued success of that organisation.”

A spokeswoman for Skyport said: “The launch of Somers Isle Minimart and the success of Love Bermuda at the international level signify a remarkable accomplishment for both Skyport and Somers Isle Trading Company.

“Together, they continue to elevate the airport experience while showcasing the essence of Bermuda to travellers from around the world.”
