A Bermuda guide to summer workouts
Good day Bermuda fitness enthusiasts!
It's that time of the year when the sun is shining, and the humidity is on full blast. While you're out there trying to rock those sizzling beach bodies, let's talk about how to work out safely in this steamy inferno without turning into a human barbecue.
Embrace your "sun-sual" side
Working out in the heat can be a steamy affair, but don't be fooled into thinking you're in a relationship with the sun. While it's important to soak up some vitamin D, remember that too much of a good thing can turn you into a walking sweat fountain.
Make sure to find breathable clothing that wicks away moisture and, no matter what your skin type, don't forget to put on plenty of sunscreen.
Sweat and the city
It's hot enough outside, so don't feel the need to crank up the heat indoors. You're there to work on your fitness, not bake like a cookie in an oven.
Indoor gyms can feel like saunas, and it's OK to request a gentle breeze from a fan or air conditioning. Besides, you don't want to be known as the person wetting up all the equipment.
“Watt-er” you thinking?
Stay hydrated, they said. Drink water, they said. We know you've heard it a million times, but water is your best pre workout and workout buddy in all of this heat.
Just like you wouldn't go to the beach without sunscreen, don't start your workout without your trusty water bottle. Take sips frequently to avoid feeling like you are in a desert.
“Sun-sible” timing
Let's be real, Bermuda's summer heat can turn any workout into a dripping mess. To avoid looking like you've just taken a dip in Warwick Long Bay, consider scheduling your outdoor workouts during the cooler parts of the day or make sure that your workout space is covered and not in direct sunlight.
Early mornings or late evenings are perfect for staying fit without feeling like a baked potato.
I scream for ice cream
After a blazing workout, there's nothing like treating yourself to something cold and refreshing. Sure, we could talk about protein shakes and chicken breasts but if we’re being completely honest, sometimes it's all about ice cream.
You've earned it! Just remember to indulge occasionally, and in moderation; we don't want your summer six-pack turning into a keg!
“Heat-ercise” caution
As a fitness trainer, I know the importance of pushing my clients but every workout does not have to be a sweat-soaked marathon.
Listen to your body, and if it's telling you to chill out then do just that. Avoid working out in extreme heat, and if you're feeling lightheaded or dizzy, it's time to hit the shade and take a break.
“Sun-ggle” up with friends
Workouts are always better with friends, right? Assemble your gang for a hilarious heatproof exercise session. Laughter is the best medicine and it'll distract you from the sweltering heat. Plus, you can all share embarrassing sweat stories afterwards – bonding at its finest!
There you have it, fit people of Bermuda. With these "sizzling" hot tips, you'll be working out safely and still have plenty of time to enjoy our beautiful island this summer.
So, go ahead, beat the heat and remember, a sense of humour is the ultimate fitness accessory.
