Emergency services called after crane rolls down embankment
Damage to a road and sidewalk that occurred after a crane toppled over and rolled down an embankment may close off the road until the end of October.
A driver had a lucky escape when his crane fell off the road and down an embankment into a storage yard.
The Island Construction vehicle hit trouble as it passed the intersection of St John’s Road and Cedar Avenue in Pembroke yesterday at about 2.37pm.
It is understood that a portion of the road crumbled underneath the vehicle, causing it to fall into the brush.
Police confirmed that the driver escaped without injury but was still assessed by EMTs at the scene before being taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
No private property or surrounding vehicles sustained any damage, and no bystanders were injured.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works said that an immediate road closure between the stoplights at the junction of St John’s Road and Cedar Avenue and the entrance to Saltus Grammar School was in effect.
He said that the road closure would remain until repairs were completed but added that the site would likely not be fixed before October 31.
A crane is expected to arrive to retrieve the overturned vehicle.
