Delray Rawlins scoops Cup Match Safe Hands award
Delray Rawlins was named as the recipient of the Calvin “Bummy” Symonds Safe Hands Award at a presentation held at the offices of Bermuda Healthcare Services yesterday.
The Bermuda captain picked up the award, given to the best fielder in Cup Match, for a performance which included his brilliant catch in the deep to dismiss his international team-mate Kamau Leverock for 38 runs off the bowling of Zeko Burgess. The accolade also came with a cash prize of $2,000.
“Obviously it’s nice to receive personal awards,’’ Rawlins said the St George’s player, who spoke of his disappointment at failing to help his side to victory. “I would have rather taken the win and not win this or anything, but it was nice to be acknowledged.”
With the ball seemingly going for a six, as the big-hitting Leverock looked to race to a fast-paced half-century, Rawlins managed to adjust and compose himself, before superbly taking the catch.
“It was lot going on in my head when the ball went up,’’ added Rawlins. “Originally I thought it was a six, but as I got around it I saw that it kept dropping, I saw that it might be an opportunity to catch the ball, once I got there I had to sort of adjust myself and luckily it stopped.
“If I didn’t catch that ball, then he would have gone on to make bigger runs. The way he was hitting the ball was fun to watch, but we didn't want to watch that at that time.”
The legendary Dennis Wainwright, a former St George’s opening batsman and wicketkeeper, who was the head adjudicator for the award, pointed out a change to requirements in order to allow all fielders to be eligible to win the accolade.
“Before the award was just for a catch so I had that changed to include everybody,’’ the 87-year-old said. “It goes to the all-round fielder now, however, a single catch was not excluded if that was the most exciting part of the game.
“Like this year, Rawlins had a good catch, that was the most exciting part of the game. It was felt that Rawlins had the best catch, he had to run quite a distance, if he had not taken that catch, it would have been six runs.”
