Bermuda’s women beach volleyball team saw their hopes of challenging for a medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games ended after defeat in the quarter-finals in Trinidad & Tobago.

Despite a valiant effort, the island’s contingent of Kayley Hamilton and Natalie Gazzard’s proved no match for the Canadian pair of Katarina Drozd and Calinda Kok, who booked their place in the next round with a comfortable 21-7, 21-7 victory.

Hamilton and Gazzard will now battle it out in the fifth-to-eighth place play-offs, starting with an encounter against England today.

Meanwhile, there were positive performances from Bermuda’s triathletes in the mixed team relay super sprint, with Jackson Langley and Fenella Wightman finishing in ninth, while Daria Desmond and Jamie Bedford placed twelfth.

In the pool, Bella Howes finished nineteenth in the 100-metre breaststroke, while sister Marleigh was twelfth in the 400 free and 20th in the 100 butterfly. In the same race, Elanna Fulton finished a further three places behind.

Brandon Adkins finished seventeenth in the 400 free, three places ahead of Thomas Cechini, with the former in 29th-place in the 100 butterfly, one place ahead of his compatriot.

The quartet of the Howes sisters, Adkins and Cechini also sealed a seventh-place finish in 4x100 freestyle mixed relay final.
