Bermuda’s beach volleyball team of Natalie Gazzard and Kayley Hamilton claimed a highly-respectable eighth place finish at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad & Tobago.

Having started the day with a 2-0 defeat to England in the first play-off match for overall position, The duo came up against Scottish duo Alexandra Clegg-Mckeown and Iona Bell seventh-to-eighth-place play-off.

Gazzard and Hamilton got off to the ideal start, taking the first set 21-12, only for their opponents to battle back and win the second set 21-16, before ultimately going on to also prevail in the deciding set 15-11, to complete the turnaround.

The island’s swimmers also wrapped up their competition at the Games, with the quartet of Bella and Marleigh Howes, Thomas Cechini and Flynn Watson-Brown all missing out on progression to the finals in their respective 50-metre freestyle heats, while Adriana Argent also missed out on a medal competing in the 800 free.

Bella Howes enjoyed the best performance, finishing fourteenth overall in a time of 27.48sec, with Watson-Brown seven places behind in 24.49 and Marleigh Howes in 25th place, touching the wall in 28.17.

Cechini settled for a 32nd-place finish overall in a time of 25.45. He then joined forces with the Howes sisters and Brandon Adkins to compete in the mixed 4x100 medley relay, claiming a 14th-place finish overall.

In her 800-metre final, Argent placed eighth overall having touched the wall in 10min 12.61sec.

Meanwhile, Denver Tucker, the only track and field athlete among the Bermuda contingent, could not make his way past the semi-finals in the men’s 200m, as his time of 22.66 placed him eighth. He had run 22.80 in the heats, to progress.
