Man fined $1,500 and banned from roads for drink-driving

A man who was stopped by police on Crow Lane last week has been disqualified from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

Duarte Borges, 40, from Warwick, pleaded guilty to drink-driving, as well as riding his motorbike without a licence and proper headgear, when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that officers stopped Borges on Thursday after seeing him riding without wearing a helmet.

When talking to him, police smelt alcohol on his breath and saw that his eyes were red and he was unsteady on his feet.

Borges was then taken to Hamilton Police Station, where a breath test showed between 212 and 214 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit for driving in Bermuda is 80mg/100ml.

In addition to being banned, Borges was fined $1,500.
