Local students are exploring Borneo this month as part of a trip organised by the Bermuda Zoological Society.

A cadre of 22 students and three staff members set off for Borneo earlier this month and went snorkelling and scuba diving in the waters of Sipadan Island.

The group then ventured inland on the Kinabatangan River to study wildlife before returning to school with a visit to SK Bilit Kinabatangan Primary School, a “tourism and green school” developed to create awareness about the importance of sustainable development.

In a series of Facebook posts on the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo Facebook page, the students have detailed some of their adventures, including watching hundreds of humphead parrotfish, Asian pygmy elephants and a variety of monkeys.

A BAMZ Facebook post said: “Island environments are uniquely crucial for their typically high levels of endemism but they are also fragile and very susceptible to invasive species.

“This group will be working at the Matang Wildlife Centre with orang-utans and other species, travelling downriver in the impressive Borneo jungles and diving in Sipadan, one of the top dive spots in the world.”
