Identity thief must pay traffic fines or go to jail
A man who failed to pay fines has been put on a payment plan and will be imprisoned if he doesn’t keep up with the payments.
In September 2022, Brenton Robinson, 63, was sentenced to nine months in prison after four traffic offences and falsely claiming to be his brother on two separate occasions.
The traffic violations occurred in October and November of 2021 and resulted in fines amounting to $3,050.
At the time of the offences, Robinson claimed he was Brandon Robinson and gave the same name when he was asked by the court more than one year later. Brandon Robinson had been living overseas for several years.
On September 15, 2022, Robinson pleaded guilty to the offences and received three months for the identity theft and six months for the traffic violations.
He was released from jail in May 2023, but the absence of payments resulted in him being taken into custody at Hamilton Police Station earlier this month.
Community service was considered as an option for Robinson, and he was agreeable towards that, but the court decided Robinson was not fit for community service due to unreliability earlier displayed.
It was decided that Robinson should pay the fines in three instalments, with the final payment being by October 16.
If no payments are made, Robinson could face up to 300 days in prison. Normally, Magistrates’ Court imprisons a person for one day for every $10 owed and not paid.
