Student admits stealing wine from supermarket
A MarketPlace employee caught a man stealing wine from its Church Street store.
Najiyah Raynor, 21, from Southampton, admitted stealing merchandise on two occasions when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The court heard that on June 26, the employee who was in the store’s elevator with Raynor noticed he was carrying two bottles of Sauvignon Blanc wine, which had a combined value of $32.38, and watched him place them inside his bike seat.
Seeing that the bottles were loose and not placed inside a shopping bag, she asked Raynor if he paid for them, to which he said ‘yes’.
The court was then told that Raynor returned to the store two days later and stole food valued at $8.57 from the buffet station.
Police arrested Raynor for both offences a short time later.
Raynor, a student at the London Institute of Banking and Finance, apologised to the court for his actions and said he had “no intention to disrespect the laws of MarketPlace”.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo sentenced Raynor to a six-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay $40.95 in restitution.
