Residents urged to trim trees in wake of storms
Residents are being warned that they could be charged $1,000 an hour if Government has to step in and cut trees that are a safety hazard.
In a statement this afternoon the Ministry of Public Works said that following Hurricane Franklin and Post Tropical Storm Idalia, it is asking people to trim their trees.
A spokeswoman said: “The ministry notes that it is aware of the current overgrowth of vegetation and tree branches, which have encroached into the island’s sidewalks and roadways.
“While the ministry has worked tirelessly to trim back those problem areas, residents are reminded that they too have a responsibility to cut back their overhanging trees and branches ― particularly those that impede pedestrians and motorists.
“Residents are reminded that they are required to keep their roadside hedges trimmed. They will receive a friendly reminder but in the cases where the threat to safe passage is apparent ― public works will cut the offending tress at a cost to the owner of $1,000 per hour.”
According to the spokeswoman public works has conducted trimming and sweeping works in the following areas:
• Cavendish Road
• Some areas along Middle Road
• Paget stop lights to Cobb’s Hill
•Manse Road
• Chapel Road
• The Causeway & Blue Hole Hill
• Middle Road near Barnes’ Corner heading towards Industrial Road
• Somerset Road near Scaur Hill; and
• Barker’s Hill, North Shore Road
The spokeswoman said: “Additional works are planned, however due to increased rainfall, overgrowth has spread faster than usual. In that regard, the public’s co-operation and patience are encouraged as the ministry work crews address these areas.”
