Bermuda’s Pan American Games team announced
Eleven athletes in five sports have been selected to represent Bermuda at the Pan American Games in Chile this month.
Medalists from the Central American and Caribbean Games will again be in action with middle-distance runner Dage Minors the sole representative for the island in track and field.
Madelyn Moore forms part of a four-strong swimming contingent alongside Harvey siblings Emma and Jack, and Sam Williamson, and she is looking forward to making the trip to Santiago.
“I am extremely excited to have been selected to compete at the Pan Am Games in Santiago,” Moore said.
“With this being the Olympic year, it’s great to start getting racing underway this early in the swim season. I am looking forward to seeing what Team Bermuda can do, not just in swimming but as a country in these games.”
Erica Hawley and Tyler Smith will be chasing valuable Olympic ranking points in the triathlon, with Smith hopeful of continuing his good recent form.
“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to compete at the Pan Am Games,” Smith said.
“Competing at major games always brings an added pressure and intensity to the race, which has really been motivating me to raise my level in these last few training blocks. I’m in great shape and looking forward to showing my form on a big stage ahead of the last year of Olympic qualifying for 2024.”
Campbell Patton and Adriana Penruddocke will be taking to the waters as Bermuda’s sailing team and the latter has her eyes on a big reward.
“I’m looking forward to giving my best against the best in our region for a chance of acountry qualification spot,” Penruddocke said.
“It’s going to be super tough, but this is the peak event I have been preparing for and I’m buzzing to get racing in Chile.”
Kaden Hopkins and Conor White will be hoping to be the fastest guys on two wheels when they take to Santiago’s roads for some competitive cycling events.
“I’m really looking forward to competing at the Pan American games,” Hopkins said.
“I enjoyed the junior Pan Am games in 2021 and I’m looking forward to doing the elite one this year against the higher level of competition. These big games are always very important goals for me and this season it will be my last race of the year and I will get to close out a long season in the Bermuda colours.
The level of the competition in Chile will be very high, but I know Conor and I are both motivated and looking to perform the best we can in the time-trial and road race and I think we’re capable of good results in both. It will be a great Games.”
Julia Hawley, Bermuda’s chef de mission for the Games is looking forward to the final push for the event.
“I’m thrilled to be leading our Bermuda Team,” she said.
“Our team is small but our athletes have had to attain very difficult standards in order to qualify and compete at these Games. There are Olympic points, Olympic time standards and even Olympic spots at all the events our athletes have qualified for.
“They will do Bermuda proud on the world stage and I will do everything as Chef to ensure their journey to the Games, and at the Games, is as smooth as possible and they are able to focus only on their competitions.”
