Senior government officials are discussing plastic pollution with representatives from around the world this week.

The issue is being discussed at this year’s Global Plastics Summit in Bangkok, Thailand.

The summit is centred on the United Nations’ Global Plastic Treaty, aimed at reducing plastic pollution worldwide.

Bermuda has joined 12 other Small Island Developing States, including Fiji, Maldives and the Republic of Palau, at a workshop during the summit. It was not specified who from the Government is representing Bermuda.

Environmental organisation Common Seas and the UK’s University of Portsmouth global plastics policy centre will moderate this workshop, which will address refill and reuse policies and responsibilities for plastic producers.

Jo Royle, chief executive of Common Seas, said: “Small Island Developing States are the pioneers of solutions to radically reduce plastics use.

“[This summit] is a vital opportunity to prepare, to enable us to deliver meaningful progress at the third round of negotiations on the UN Plastics Treaty in November.

“I am looking forward to working with leaders from across the Ocean Nations to co-design solutions that reduce plastic consumption and waste.”

The event will offer attendees both ground knowledge and technical practices.

Steve Fletcher, director of the University of Portsmouth global plastics policy centre, said: “We are delighted to be working together to help identify pathways through which SIDS can apply unique, innovative and progressive plastics policy approaches in line with the requirements of the Global Plastics Treaty.”
