Goals galore on opening night of ball hockey season
Nineteen goals were scored in just two matches as the Bermuda Ball Hockey Association got off to a flyer at Pembroke Community Club on Monday.
Jeremy Estey was the star of the show in CG Insurance’s 8-4 win over BDA Spirits, scoring five goals with Nathan Kowalski (2) and Akhil Kapur netting the remainder. Adam Mattatall, Hart Freedman, Jeff Morash and Jeff Loper were on target for BDA Sprits
Hamilton Princess saw off Frontier 4-3 in the second match of the night thanks to two goals from Matthew Benson and one apiece from Adam Fenos and Matt Katzsch. Bill Calko, Curran Trenouth and Michael Travis found the net for Frontier.
Hamilton Princess goalkeeper Marcel Bouwens was impressive on debut and also showed how versatile an offensive goalie can be with fine passes to players from the last line of defence.
Action continues on Wednesday with ACT taking on Spine and Sport before defending champions Appleby facing Hamilton Princess.
The league was scheduled to to start last week but rain left the surface unsuitable for play. Renovations have started at the rink in anticipation of Bermuda hosting the 2025 World Championships, with new energy efficient lights already in use.
“We had some rain delays last week unfortunately,’’ said eague president Freedman.
“Wednesday was completely rained out and those matches were played on Monday. The lights are working great though and have been fully installed.”
