Members of Bermuda’s Department of Public Prosecutions joined lawyers from more than 70 other countries at a conference in London last month.

Hundreds of lawyers attended the International Association of Prosecutors annual general conference, which was held from September 24 to 27 and centred around the changing nature of crime in the 21st century.

A government statement read: “The annual general conference allows prosecutors to interact with colleagues from all parts of the world to enhance operational efficiency in the creation of networks and the exchange of information, which is particularly important to optimise the mutual legal assistance component in cross-border prosecutions.”

Cindy Clarke, the Director of Public Prosecutions, chaired the event’s first full session. This six-person panel addressed the structure of prosecution agencies.

Adley Duncan, also from Bermuda prosecution, spoke about managing artificial intelligence risks during trials, and junior prosecutor Paul Wilson led a workshop about data encryption, which included speakers from Australia, Taiwan and the Netherlands.

Highlighting the warm reception Bermuda received at the conference, Ms Clarke said: “We were pleased with the invitation to serve as moderators and panellists for several sessions.

“There is every reason to expect that Bermuda will continue her longstanding and successful involvement with her international partners with the acknowledged mutual goal of strategic development.”
