Cruise visitor caught with cannabis in cabin

A cruise ship passenger was caught with cannabis inside his cabin yesterday, Magistrates’ Court heard.

Stephen Weber, 60, admitted bringing the drug, as well as items containing THC, to the island when he appeared in court and chose to keep his case in Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that security officers found a vape pen and a brown bag, both with items containing THC, when they searched Weber after he disembarked the Norwegian Escape.

Weber, who lives in Pennsylvania, showed officers his permit to have medical marijuana before they searched his cabin, where more of the substances were found.

Weber apologised to the court, but said he did not know medical marijuana was illegal on the island.

Magistrate Maria Sofianos fined Weber $1,000 — $500 for each offence — and ordered that he pay it in full immediately.
