Budding players and referees benefit from mentor initiatives
The Bermuda Rugby Football Board has realised gains on the development front from the World Rugby Classic, with up-and-coming players and referees receiving mentorship.
Players from the participating eight teams have taken time to provide coaching to Bermuda’s budding talent.
The visiting referees have also shared their knowledge with their counterparts on the island.
Last Saturday, the second day of action in the Classic, the Bermuda boys under-14 team took centre stage, as they showcased their skills in an exhibition match.
The 30-minute game allowed the young players to display their abilities before a live audience and provided strong preparation for an overseas tour next year.
The following day, members of Classic Ireland graced the BRFU’s Sunday Rugby Programme at the Flora Duffy Stadium with nearly 150 children aged from under-6 up to under-14 taking part in the initiative.
The Irish legends led coaching sessions alongside volunteer coaches, providing a memorable experience for young players to learn from former professionals.
On Monday, players from the Classic Springboks provided coaching to Beyond Rugby, a group of students aged between 14 and 17 at Police Field.
The young participants received tips and tricks while engaging in skill workshops and simulated game play.
Last night, renowned Classic referees, Allan Lewis and Jonathan Kaplan conducted an educational session for all local referees and match officials.
The session catered for existing referees and officials, as well as those looking to transition from playing rugby to officiating.
Kaplan took charge of a total of 70 Test matches between 1996 and 2013, with only Wayne Barnes and Nigel Owens having handled more international fixtures.
Gemma Godfrey, the BRFU president expressed her appreciation for the opportunities brought about by the Classic that are of benefit to the local game.
“We are immensely thankful for the support in creating opportunities for Bermuda rugby,” Godfrey said.
“It is through initiatives like these that we can inspire and develop the rugby talent of tomorrow and foster a thriving rugby community.
“The willingness to support and give time to our players and officials underscores the commitment to fostering a culture of growth and excellence within the Bermuda rugby community.
“Such opportunities are instrumental in shaping the future of the sport on the island, and we extend our heartfelt appreciation to all involved.”
