A mock aircraft accident is testing emergency response capabilities at the airport today.

The exercise started at 10.15am and several organisations are taking part.

Skyport, which operates L F Wade International Airport, said: “The exercise is designed to test specific aspects of the airport’s emergency plans, with both governmental and non-governmental agencies on hand to participate.

“The event will be a simulation of an aircraft accident in the waters in Castle Harbour.

“The purpose is to demonstrate the ability of specialist rescue services, including the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service and the Bermuda Coastguard, to quickly respond to an aircraft accident where the aircraft rests in the water.

“This exercise will also test inter-agency emergency coordination amongst agencies in accordance with International Civil Aviation Standards and the Skyport Airport Emergency Plan.”

Skyport’s statement asked the public to steer clear of the area until 11.30am “as emergency response vessels will respond as if it were a real-life scenario”.

It added: “Skyport apologises for any inconvenience and would like to thank the public for their co-operation.”
