Retail sales volume declined 0.5% year-over-year to June
Retail sales volume in Bermuda decreased for the seventh consecutive month in June, falling by 0.5 per cent year-over-year, according to figures released on Friday by the Ministry of Economy and Labour.
That figure was determined after adjusting for the retail sales rate of inflation, which was measured at 5 per cent in June.
In value terms, retail sales increased to an estimated $105.9 million, representing a 4.5 per cent rise in sales value.
This increase in sales value was caused by elevated rates of inflation.
Four of the seven sectors recorded year-over-year volume decreases compared with June 2022.
Sales volume for food stores fell 4.4 per cent, liquor stores' sales volume fell 6.2 per cent, service stations' sales volume decreased 0.4 per cent, and the sales volume at apparel stores dropped 4.4 per cent.
Three sectors had increases in sales volume compared with the previous year.
Motor vehicle stores' sales volume grew 3.3 per cent, and the sales volume for building material stores increased by 4.4 per cent.
In the “all other store types” sector — comprising stores selling household items, furniture, appliances, electronics, pharmaceuticals and tourist-related goods — there was a 1.4 per cent increase in sales volume.
Selected overseas declarations decreased 8.3 per cent compared with June 2022.
Imports via courier decreased $2.1 million to $13.5 million owing to declines in the importation of pharmaceutical products as well as clothing and accessories.
Imports by households via sea decreased $0.4 million to $7.9 million owing to decreased importation of items in the ships, boats and other floating structures.
Declarations at the airport by returning residents increased $0.2 million to $3.6 million, while imports via the Bermuda Post Office remained the same at $0.5 million.
Excluding Sundays, there were 25 shopping days, the same as in June 2022.
