A music teacher at Saltus Grammar School will be marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City today.

Kelley Taylor, who teaches secondary instrumental music at the school, is one of 400 band directors who will be participating in one of the United States’s most celebrated annual events.

Ms Taylor will play the clarinet during the Saluting America’s Band Directors parade entry, which will centre on the theme “We teach music, we teach life”.

A statement said the entrants “have collectively mentored and taught hundreds of thousands of students.

“These professionals not only teach and direct music, but they also teach about life itself.”

Sharing her excitement about today’s event, Ms Taylor, who also participated with the group in last year’s Rose Parade, said: “I am so proud to represent music education with a group of the best band directors from throughout the United States.

“I have spent much of my music teaching career in international schools as well as 18 years teaching in Arkansas and Texas.”

Julie Rousseau, the head of Saltus Grammar School, said the parade is a “great opportunity to celebrate Ms Taylor and her passion as a music educator”.

“Showcasing a 400-strong group of band directors at an event the size of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is no small feat.

“We are looking forward to sharing highlights of this event with our community here in Bermuda via social media.”

The school also plans to livestream the parade in a classroom beginning at 9.30am.
