More than 70in of rain as 2023 on course for record
Heavy rainfall this month has helped to make 2023 the third wettest year on record — with more than a month still left on the calendar.
As of yesterday, the Bermuda Weather Service had recorded 73.08in of rainfall this year, more than 20 inches above the average year-to-date rainfall of 51.81in.
The figure surpasses the total annual rainfall of all but two years since records begin in 1949.
This year is already is only 2.36in from the 75.42in record established in 1962 and the wettest year since 1983 when 74.69in of rain was recorded.
Barring an unusually dry December, it is likely those figures will be surpassed before the end of the year.
At the start of November the island was already the 15th wettest year on record fuelled by record rainfall in May and near-record rainfall in both June and October.
The heavy rainfall has been blamed for an increase in potholes on Bermuda’s roads, which the Ministry of Public Works has said it is working to address.
The trend of wet weather has continued this month with 9.8in of rain added to the tally as of yesterday, the most since 1962 when 10.54in of rain was recorded in the month.
More rain is forecast to reach the island this week, potentially making this month another record setter.
