Trust event to consider impact of UK Labour government on Bermuda
A presentation about how a Labour government in Britain might impact the island and other similar jurisdictions is among the features of the annual Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners Bermuda Conference, which opens on Wednesday at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.
James Quarmby, partner and head of the private wealth team at London law firm Stephenson Harwood, will consider what a Labour government might mean for non-doms, the world of “offshore” and Britain’s Overseas Territories, organisers said.
The Governor, Rena Lalgie, and Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, will also take part in the two-day programme.
Step is a global professional body, with more than 21,000 members comprising lawyers, accountants, trustees and other practitioners that help families to plan for their futures.
The Bermuda branch, which has designed the conference, has some 180 members who serve the island’s trust and private client industry.
Alex Whittaker is the chairman of Step Bermuda and client director at Hamilton Trust Company Ltd.
He said: “The executive committee is proud to serve our members and ultimately help drive forward Bermuda’s trust and private client sectors.
“The annual conference is the highlight of our events calendar, and a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on Bermuda’s thriving trust industry to both a local and international audience.
“We are excited to have over 30 speakers participating and are humbled to have attendees flying in from all over the world to join us.”
Henry Tucker, managing partner at Harneys’ Bermuda office, said: “Harneys is delighted to be headline sponsor of the Step Bermuda Conference as part of its initiative to promote access to Bermuda’s private wealth industry across the firm’s network of offices in North America, Europe and Asia.
“Bermuda has a demonstrated track record of preserving wealth over generations that makes it a very strong fit with the current top priorities of [ultra high-net-worth individuals], family offices and their advisers, who are operating in a rapidly shifting geopolitical and economic climate.
“Harneys is pleased to help meet this demand by offering access to excellent and responsive Bermuda legal advice across its network and contribute to the growth and stability of Bermuda’s trusts and estates industry for many more generations to come.”
Mr Hayward said: “Bermuda has long been an attractive destination for the high net worth services industry. We were one of the first international trust jurisdictions and remain a premier jurisdiction for trusts, family offices, high net worth individuals and other private-client structures.
“Bermuda’s regulatory regime ensures privacy while meeting the highest standards of global compliance. The broadening of Bermuda’s wealth management industry has been identified as an area for growth, and the island is in the process of expanding its offering with new legislation.”
Other topics at the conference include best practices and common design flaws of family offices, planning for the modern family, public relations considerations for private clients, Africa opportunities and challenges in the 2020s, offshore trusts and European families, trustees’ responsibilities for potentially insolvent trusts, digital assets in the context of modern estate planning, trust case update, and offshore developments in relation to mental incapacity.
