Fiery start for Custard The Dragon
Custard The Dragon stood out among during the last round of harness racing at Vesey Street.
Andy Stoneham’s eight-year-old stallion clocked the fastest time of 1:04 flat competing in the Free for All with driver Andrea Westerfield in the sulky.
Stoneham is delighted that his horse has made a promising start to the season.
“We are absolutely encouraged with this horse’s performance so far because he is an eight-year-old now and it took him a while to get to this point,” he said.
“He’s getting better with age like a wine, or we have just taken this long to figure him out.
“One of the things that makes it so challenging with horse racing is you can’t have a conversation with a horse.
“It’s a constant guessing game and we have to find out by trial and error what makes him thrive and what holds him back.”
Stoneham’s horse was among a trio of double heat winners, which also included Burrows Family’s two-year-old filly Whatyatalkinbout and Catrina Stephens’s mare GV Special Dream.
Two mares recorded the second and third fastest times also competing in the Free for All division reserved for the fastest ponies on the island.
Google Me, owned by father and son pair Robert and Tyler Lopes, had the second fastest time of 1:04/2, while J & A Peniston’s Reel Patrol stopped the clock at 1:05/1. The season’s fastest time to date stands at 1:03 flat and was achieved by Simsfield Stables gelding Simsfield Hardtimes on October 11.
