Landmark corporate income tax legislation to be tabled

Sessions House (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Two hotel investment orders — one for Ariel Sands in Devonshire and the other for the Bermudiana Beach Resort in Warwick — are to be tabled today in the House of Assembly for debate at a later session.

Legislators will also get the annual reports and finances for the island’s financial intelligence agency for 2021 through 2023.

David Burt is to address the House on his attendance at the United Nations COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

The Premier will speak on the Corporate Income Tax Act 2023, which is set to be tabled today.

The House will hear an update on the island’s Economic Recovery Plan from Jason Hayward, the economy and labour minister, while Wayne Furbert, the tourism minister, will give a statement on cruise ship season.

The upcoming digital health strategy, aimed at improving healthcare efficiency and preventing erroneous duplications of tests and other services, will be addressed by Kim Wilson, the health minister.

Just two Bills are up for discussion in today’s session.

MPs are expected to debate a move to establish the Southeast Hamilton Economic Empowerment Zone — one of the pledges from the 2023-24 Speech from the Throne.

The debate will be opened by Mr Hayward.

Legislators will also debate the Bermuda Immigration and Protection (Prohibition Order) Amendment Act 2023.

The changes will enable the minister, in tandem with the chief immigration officer, to change the procedure for making orders prohibiting landing in Bermuda from the affirmative resolution, meaning it gets debated, to the negative resolution procedure, where it is not.
