Two months after suffering the agony of missing out on qualification for next year’s ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Bermuda have began preparing for the long process of trying to secure a spot at the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

Under assistant coach Cal Waldron, Bermuda are back holding indoor training sessions once a week as the team gears up for the ICC Cricket World Challenge League play-off in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which will be held from February 22 to March 3.

The national team’s first session back took place at Bermuda College last Friday, with the second scheduled at Bermuda High School today.

Waldron is in charge of the team until the Bermuda Cricket Board, under new president Lloyd Smith, makes a decision on the national coach and he anticipates the attendance to grow before the team takes a break for Christmas, with training to intensify in the new year.

“We started training last Friday at Bermuda College and it was an evening session between 7pm and 9pm,’’ Waldron said.

“We’re going to be doing fitness and some ball skills, batting and bowling. This week we’re going to be at BHS on Friday night.

“The facility at BHS allows us to run in to bowl and bat. They have the nets so we can have some live bowling and also use a bowling machine.

“Last week the turnout was low but we expect the numbers to increase this week. Some guys had commitments last week and couldn't make it. Captain Delray Rawlins didn't attend due to being sick.

“Some players were off island such as Kamau Leverock, Dominic Sabir and Jarryd Richardson, and it’s up to them to state whether or not they’re available going forward.

“We’ll have two more sessions up until the Christmas break and then in the new year we will train on Fridays and Sunday mornings.

“It will be indoors or outdoors depending on the weather, either at BHS or outdoors at the nets at the stadium.”

The tour organisers are hoping to finalise details surrounding the Malaysia trip in the next few days

“We’re working with the group that have been in place since our qualifiers in Argentina this year,” Waldron said.

“Depending on their availability, we may have to bring in replacements but we’re hoping to know by the end of this week who is available and who is not.

“We’re allowed 14 players on the tour and we want a pool of at least 17 players as that way if someone gets injured or is unavailable, we can replace them.

In Malaysia, Bermuda will face Italy on February 22 and Saudi Arabia on February 25, before they round off their group against Kuwait a day later.

Malaysia, Vanuatu, Bahrain and Tanzania make up the other pool.

At the end of the group matches, the top three teams from each pool will proceed to the Super Six stage. Only four qualifying slots are available at the 14-team 2027 World Cup, which will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia
