Unbeaten Devonshire Colts stretch their lead in the First Division
Wolves 0 Devonshire Colts 2
Devonshire Colts stretched their lead at the top of the First Division after maintaining their unbeaten streak in a scrappy clash at Bernard Park on Sunday.
Sage’ Blair Paynter broke the deadlock in the second minute of first-half stoppage time to earn Colts the lead at the interval. Chemarl Henry then added an insurance strike in the 88th minute to put the match beyond Wolves, whose title and promotion hopes suffered another setback.
Despite the win, Colts coach Ray Jones expressed mixed feelings after the game.
“The positives obviously is the three points and another shutout, but I was not happy with the performance,” he told The Royal Gazette.
“I would say it was one of our worst performances so far this season. The match was a scrappy affair. It had the feel of a top of the table clash as both teams appeared very tense.”
Jones’s charges have a healthy nine-point advantage over second-place Robin Hood at the midway stage of the season and have yet to drop a single point after winning all their matches to date.
“We are very happy with our first half and to be sitting on the top with a bit of a cushion is good,” Jones added.
“But we must stay grounded and just take one game at a time. We must not let the undefeated talk get to our heads as this is a young squad.”
Capitalising on Wolves’s slip up was Hood, who outscored St David’s Warriors 6-2 at Lord’s to jump from third to second.
Jahron Dickinson led the charge with a brace while Clay Darrell, Jesse Seymour, Macai Simmons and Jordan Darrell scored a goal each. St David’s replied through two goals from Christian Lugo-Elibox.
Boulevard boosted their promotion hopes as goals from Shaki Pearman and Sanchey Grant earned them a 2-0 win over Ireland Rangers at Somerset Cricket Club on Friday night.
The remaining match between Southampton Rangers and Somerset Eagles at Southampton Oval was postponed and has been rescheduled for December 30 at the same venue.
