A 56-year-old man from Pembroke has been charged with possession of a firearm and conspiring to import cannabis into the island with intent to supply.

Kevin DeRoza heard the charges in Magistrates’ Court yesterday before senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson. He was released on bail as it cannot be guaranteed that medical treatment he requires can be given in a timely manner in prison owing to inadequate staffing levels.

The court heard that on or around November 9, Mr DeRoza had in his possession a firearm, namely a Glock 9mm pistol.

The court also heard that between an unknown date and November 9, Mr DeRoza conspired with others to import a controlled drug, and that on or around November 9 he had in possession cannabis resin which was intended for supply.

He was not required to make a plea as the case will be heard in the Supreme Court.

Ms Anderson said she had “no choice” but to release Mr DeRoza on bail owing to there being no guarantee of required medical treatment.

He was released on bail of $50,000. Under the conditions of his bail, he is required to reside at his given address in Pembroke, notify the courts of any change of address, surrender his travel documents and report to Hamilton Police Station three times a week.

He was also put under curfew from 7pm to 7am unless he is required to receive the required medical treatment.

The case is to be mentioned at the January 2 arraignments session.
