Residents of one of the island’s largest residential complexes for seniors will receive grocery vouchers this weekend as part of a giveaway by Southampton Parish Council.

On Saturday, council members will visit Dr Cann Park to deliver $50 vouchers to every senior in the complex.

Lisa Spurling, council member, said: “Our annual Christmas giveaway is the most heart-warming and rewarding community outreach that we do.

“After they open the door and we say why we have come to see them, the sincere gratitude and emotional appreciation makes us and them feel a strong sense of community.

“It really does make us happy to be able to donate and help our elders celebrate the season.”

Members of the council visited the Rockaway Ferry Stop this week to offer passengers juice, water, pastries, granola bars and snacks to make their ride into Hamilton more enjoyable.

Despite the rain, council members served about 50 people who were boarding the 7.20am and 7.55am ferries.

Sabrina Kirby, council member, said: “Our council tries to hold events and activities at least four times per year to let Southampton’s residents know we are excited to serve them.

“We have met passengers here a few times in the past, and it is always well received. We most recently surprised the passengers on June 30, and they were so gracious we planned to repeat the gift before the end of the year.”
