Woman banned after near-miss with police car
A Pembroke woman who failed a breath test after nearly crashing into a police car was banned from the roads.
Diante Trim, 37, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while above the legal blood-alcohol limit in Sandys in an incident on October 30.
Magistrates’ Court heard that at about 1.40am that day police were driving west on Malabar Road when they saw a vehicle travelling east on the road swerve across the centre line.
The officers took evasive action and steered on to the kerb to avoid a collision before turning around and stopping the car near the entrance of Runway Lane.
When the officers told her that she had nearly struck a marked police vehicle, she responded: “I didn’t see you.”
Trim agreed to provide a breath sample, and a test found that she had 177mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, more than double the legal limit of 80mg.
After she pleaded guilty, she apologised to the court, stating that she was not aware that she was over the limit when she decided to drive.
Magistrate Maria Sofianos said that while Trim’s apology was heartfelt, drinking and driving was a very serious matter.
The magistrate fined Trim $1,500 and banned her from driving all vehicles for a period of 18 months.
